The story
Just 15 kilometers from Saarbrücken, near the border with Lorraine, you will find the Gräfinthaler Hof. The restaurant occupies part of a former Wilhelmiten monastery, founded in 1243 by the Countess of Blieskastel. The site, with its ancient stone walls and restored buildings, has long been a destination for pilgrims and hikers. Today, it is also a destination for those seeking refined, seasonal cooking.
Jörg Künzer and his daughter Maureen Künzer run the restaurant, and their work has earned them a Michelin recommendation. In 2025, they were also named “Gastgeber des Jahres” (Hosts of the Year) in Germany, an accolade that speaks to the warmth and precision of their hospitality. The Michelin nod confirms the quality of the kitchen, which focuses on fresh, market-driven dishes.
The atmosphere is one of calm and history. The restaurant’s own website promises “genießen und wohlfühlen” – enjoyment and well-being. The dining rooms are set within the old monastery walls, creating a backdrop that is both elegant and grounded. The approach to the food mirrors this: nothing is forced, and the ingredients are allowed to speak.
While the menu changes regularly, the Sunday menu is a particular highlight, and the kitchen serves lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, with a Sunday lunch service. The setting, just outside Saarbrücken, makes it an ideal spot for a leisurely meal that connects the past to the present.
