The story

Gasthof Schütte in Schmallenberg – Classic Cuisine with Michelin Recognition

A Legacy of Hospitality in the Sauerland

At Gasthof Schütte, tradition and understated elegance meet in the heart of the Sauerland. The Schütte family has welcomed guests for nearly three centuries – the current generation carries forward a story that began with a wayside inn on the old trade route from Cologne to Leipzig. The half-timbered Stammhaus, rebuilt in 1774 after a fire, still stands as the soul of the property, its walls holding hand-forged rings where travelers once tied their horses.

Today, the house is a 4-star superior Landhotel, its classic cuisine celebrated well beyond the region. The kitchen delivers a refined, ingredient-driven interpretation of traditional dishes – an approach that earned the restaurant a Michelin recommendation. The dining experience here is one of quiet confidence: no fuss, only quality rooted in the landscape and the house’s long memory.

Setting and Atmosphere

The restaurant reflects the hotel’s philosophy of “eine Spur persönlicher” – a touch more personal. Meals are served in spaces that blend historic charm with contemporary comfort: beamed ceilings, warm woods, and windows looking out onto the Fachwerk idyll of Oberkirchen. In summer, the park-like garden with its brook and outdoor pool offers an alternative setting. The atmosphere is familial but never informal, precise yet unhurried.

Roots and Renewal

The Schütte family has been on this land for 18 generations. The current chef, Karl Anton Schütte, has shaped the kitchen since 1994, refining both the wine and food menus in line with the house’s evolving ambition. The kitchen draws on a larder of regional produce, prepared with the clarity and restraint that define classic cuisine. While the menu changes with the seasons, the guiding principle remains constant: honest, accomplished cooking that honours the past without being bound by it.

Gasthof Schütte is a place where history is lived, not displayed – and where a meal becomes part of that long, unhurried story.
