The story

Zur Tanne: Michelin-Recommended Country Cooking in Schönau im Schwarzwald

A Black Forest Family Affair

Over four centuries old, the Ruch family’s Gasthaus in the quiet village of Tunau has evolved into a destination for thoughtful country cooking. Erich and Frauke Ruch have run the inn for decades, and their son Claus Ruch—who trained in renowned restaurants in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany—now leads the kitchen. His work has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to the precision and heart behind the stove.

What’s on the Plate

The menu is anchored in regional produce and changes with the seasons. Expect hearty classics like roast pork, grilled fish, and vegetarian options, alongside game dishes in autumn. The kitchen’s respect for tradition is evident in every plate, and the selection of wines—chosen to complement the cooking—adds another layer of pleasure. Desserts are made in-house, a fitting end to meals that feel both rustic and refined.

The Setting

The 400-year-old Black Forest house is a study in charm: low ceilings, wooden beams, and a warmth that comes from decades of family hospitality. The restaurant has outdoor seating for warmer months, and parking is available. Whether you stop in after a hike through the surrounding 50 kilometers of trails or come specifically for the cooking, Zur Tanne offers a genuine taste of the region.
