The story
Perched at 700 metres in the idyllic mountain village of Pfaffenberg, Berggasthof Schlüssel is a small, charming inn with nearly 130 years of history. Since taking over in March 2015, chef Jakob Brasch and his kitchen team have transformed this traditional Black Forest house into a destination for refined, contemporary cooking.
The restaurant’s philosophy is straightforward: dishes are prepared fresh, completely without artificial flavours or preservatives. The focus is on regional, seasonal ingredients, treated with skill and a modern sensibility. The menu ranges from a hearty Vesperkarte (snack menu) and traditional classics to multi-course tasting menus. A five-course evening menu, available on all open days except Sundays, offers a glimpse into the kitchen’s ambition—dishes such as kingfish sashimi with lime-ginger vinaigrette, or a duo of veal hip and braised cheek with homemade potato dumplings and market vegetables.
The atmosphere is warm and unhurried. The restaurant’s unique terrace offers a stunning view over the Wiesental valley, while the cosy interior invites lingering. For those wanting to stay, the inn offers eleven individually furnished guest rooms.
Berggasthof Schlüssel’s commitment to high-quality, good-value cooking has been recognised with a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026. It is a place where the pleasures of the table are taken seriously, yet the welcome remains genuine and unpretentious.
