The story

Hof Grothues-Potthoff - Hasenklee in Senden | Modern Cuisine & Farm-to-Table Dining

Hof Grothues-Potthoff – Hasenklee

Just outside Senden, in the heart of the Münsterland, a farm with nearly 800 years of family tradition has become a destination for those who value food that is both rooted and refined. Hof Grothues-Potthoff is a working estate with its own café, bakery, farm shop, and a restaurant that has earned a Michelin recommendation. The cooking here is modern cuisine, but its soul is firmly in the soil.

The restaurant's approach is built on the principle of bringing produce directly from the land to the table. The farm grows its own fruit, presses its own juices, and bakes its own bread. This farm-to-table ethos is not a marketing phrase here — it is the daily reality of a family that has worked this land for centuries. The menu changes with the seasons, and the kitchen lets the ingredients speak for themselves.

The setting is equally compelling. The restaurant occupies a series of light-filled spaces on the farm: a winter garden that opens onto a terrace, a main room furnished in country-house style, and a private dining room on the upper floor that can host up to sixty guests. In warmer months, two additional terraces offer seating in what the family describes as "protected beer-garden atmosphere" or with a view across the farmyard.

The Hasenklee kitchen offers a range of dishes that balance hearty tradition with modern lightness. From the menu, one can choose a colourful salad with house-baked bread, a lentil bolognese with pasta, or a more substantial Bauernpfanne with sour pickle relish. The Reibeplätzchen — crispy potato pancakes — come either with apple sauce or with cured salmon and a mustard-dill sauce. The Hofcafé, which operates during the day, is known for its own Konditorei, turning out cakes and tortes that change monthly — the Kuppel Torte and Après Ski Torte were recent offerings.

The wine list is small and carefully chosen, with selections from the Pfalz, Franconia, and Baden, plus a house sparkling wine from Weingut Schloss Affaltrach. The farm's own apple, pear, and berry juices — many of them organic — are also available as spritzers.

What makes Hof Grothues-Potthoff special is the ease with which it combines the everyday and the exceptional. You can come for a slice of cake and coffee, or for a full dinner that justifies a drive from Münster or beyond. The Michelin recommendation recognises what the regulars already know: that this is a place where the cooking is serious, the setting is genuine, and the welcome has been shaped by generations.
