The story
In the heart of the Allgäu, surrounded by mountains and the sound of the Ostrach river, the Gasthaus Obere Mühle has been a destination for those who appreciate honest, regional cooking. The building dates back to 1433, first documented as a mill, later a sawmill until 1968. The Egger-Rohrmoser family bought the property in 1989 and lovingly restored the half-timbered structure, converting the old mill into a restaurant that retains its original shingle facade, steep roof, and rustic parlours.
The kitchen is led by Oliver Egger, a long-time chef whose style is rooted in the region yet open to Mediterranean inspiration. Local game from the nearby forests, veal and beef grilled over an open wood fire, and classic Allgäu dishes like Kalbskopf (calf’s head) and Kässpätzle (cheese noodles) are mainstays. Fish is also handled with skill. Desserts, notably, are the domain of Ursula Egger-Rohrmoser, whose patisserie talents have been a fixture for over three decades.
The restaurant is now run by the next generation: Maria Großer and her husband Florian, with Oliver Egger still at the stoves. The team is small and personal, and the atmosphere is convivial and unpretentious. In 2026, the Michelin guide recognised the Obere Mühle as a Recommended restaurant, a nod to its consistent quality and authentic Bavarian character.
Whether you come for a leisurely lunch, a dinner of grilled meats, or simply a glass of wine in the bar, the Obere Mühle offers a genuine taste of the Allgäu, rooted in history and run with warmth.
