Nannina: A Family Affair

At Nannina in Stuttgart-Ost, the Di Tommaso family brings the warmth and flavor of southern Italy to the table. The restaurant is named after its chef and owner, Giovanna “Nannina” Di Tommaso, whose earliest and fondest memories are of her mother and grandmother cooking in their Apulian kitchen. “Before the sun came up, Mama was already in the kitchen kneading dough for fresh pasta,” she recalls. Those long wooden tables dusted with flour and the endless shaping of orecchiette – little ear-shaped pastas – are the foundation of everything Nannina serves today.

The cuisine is Italian through and through, rooted in the traditions of Puglia but expressed with a personal, seasonal touch. Giovanna works with her son Fabio, who manages the front of house, and her brother Bartolomeo, who oversees the wine. Together they run a restaurant that feels like an extension of their home. “Good food must be made with joy,” Giovanna says. “We take the fun in our work very seriously.”

The Heart of the Kitchen

Seasonality drives the menu. The team sources fresh, regional ingredients and lets the produce speak. Dishes change with the calendar, but the philosophy remains constant: respect for the ingredient, technique learned from family, and a love that you can taste. A reviewer from Topmagazin Stuttgart describes Giovanna as “inspired by her homeland Apulia,” cooking “with passion and inexhaustible creativity,” while the Stuttgarter Zeitung calls the restaurant “very classic and very good.”

The restaurant’s recognition by the Michelin Guide as a Recommended restaurant is a natural extension of this approach. It is not a goal in itself, but a reflection of the daily commitment to produce that is “erlesene Zutaten, mit Leidenschaft zubereitet” – exquisite ingredients, prepared with passion.

Atmosphere and Setting

The dining room is elegant yet unpretentious, and in warmer months the Mediterranean-inspired terrace offers an al fresco escape. The service is attentive but relaxed, carried by the family’s genuine hospitality. “Tutti a tavola!” – everyone to the table – is the call that still signals the start of a meal, just as it did in Giovanna’s childhood home.
