The story
Schloß-Hotel Petry in Treis-Karden anchors its Mosel regional cuisine in four generations of continuous service. Walter and Elfriede Petry opened the original property in 1956, establishing a foundation that later expanded into a historic castle complex purchased in 1978. Hans-Günter Bell joined as a young cook in 1958 and guided the culinary direction for decades, passing the standards to his son Oliver, who earned his master chef title in 1996. Today the kitchen emphasizes creative fresh cooking built around a careful selection of local ingredients, a method recognized by the Schlemmer Atlas.
The property transformed when the family acquired a former 13th-century Franciscan monastery building, which now houses guest rooms and event spaces connected to the original inn. A lift runs through the main structure, while the Rittersaal serves as the central gathering point for meals and celebrations. Guests move between the historic Stammhaus and the newer castle wing without losing the sense of uninterrupted hospitality. Large windows frame views of the vineyards and river valley, creating a dining environment that feels grounded in the landscape rather than separated from it.
The dining program shifts toward a reduced Vesperkarte during the afternoon hours, offering guests a lighter way to sample Mosel cuisine before evening service. Wine selections highlight the surrounding slopes, drawing directly from the same terrain that supplies the morning market deliveries. Families and travelers often linger at shared tables, following a tradition of large gatherings that the Bell household has maintained since the early renovations. Every element of the menu reflects a straightforward commitment to seasonal clarity and local sourcing.
