The story
Since 1913, the Liebich family has been welcoming guests to the Johanniter-Kreuz in Überlingen-Andelshofen. Now in its fourth generation, this 4-star hotel and restaurant sits in the quiet countryside near Lake Constance, surrounded by golf courses and gardens. The atmosphere is unhurried, with dining rooms that range from the rustic Bauernstüble to the light-filled Wintergarten and a terrace for warm evenings.
Chef Andreas Liebich, committed to the style of the Linzgau-Köche, cooks with a focus on regionality and lightness. His kitchen makes use of fresh products from the area – wild game from the region, herbs from the hotel’s own garden, and seasonal vegetables – composed into ever-new creations. The à la carte menu changes regularly, and special menus such as the seasonally rotating Romantik Gourmet Menü and the vegetarian menu offer deeper exploration of this country cooking style. Even long-forgotten recipes are revived and given a modern touch.
The Michelin guide has recognised Johanniter-Kreuz with a recommendation, reflecting the consistent quality of Andreas Liebich’s cooking. Whether you choose a classic dish from the Traditions Menü – like Kalbsrahmbraten with hand-scraped Spätzle – or a lighter option such as the Zanderfilet on lobster sauce, the emphasis is on honest, refined flavours. The kitchen also accommodates dietary needs, preparing adapted menus for lactose or gluten intolerance on request.
The main à la carte restaurant, the Kaminzimmer, is set in the former stable with exposed timber framing and an open fireplace at its centre – a warm, personal space. The Bauernstüble recalls “Grandfather’s times” with its cosy, homey feel, while the Wintergarten, flooded with daylight, seats up to 15 for private celebrations. On warm days, the terrace becomes a favourite spot for a leisurely meal. Each room adds to the sense of a place where tradition and comfort meet.
