The story
In the Bavarian countryside between Waging am See and Salzburg, Landhaus Tanner is an inn and hotel that balances tradition with a clear, modern sensibility. “Pleasure is our passion,” the Tanner family writes, and their approach is grounded in the ingredients and landscapes around them.
Chef Franz Tanner runs the kitchen with a commitment to the slow-food philosophy. He knows his suppliers personally – beef from a local butcher in Waging, fish from a farm in Taching, goat’s cheese from an organic farm in Kirchanschöring. Between 30 and 40 percent of his produce is organic. The result is country cooking that feels both honest and refined: upscale, regional Alpine cuisine that reinterprets rural life without losing its roots.
The dining room is furnished in an unobtrusive Alpine style, with views of the natural surroundings. For warmer months, there is a sun terrace and beer garden. A separate “Stüberl” room offers a cosier, more traditional setting with warm colours and wooden furniture.
This commitment to quality and sustainability has earned Landhaus Tanner a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good value and a Michelin Green Star. It is also listed in the Slow Food Guide 2024, a seal awarded to establishments that avoid flavour enhancers and convenience products, demonstrate transparency in sourcing, and show regional expertise.
The wine list reflects the same philosophy, with a strong focus on organic wines from Austria and Italy – Wachau, Kamptal, South Tyrol, Tuscany, and beyond – chosen to complement the Alpine cuisine.
Stefanie Tanner welcomes and looks after the guests, bringing warmth and genuine hospitality to every visit. Together, the couple has created a place where the connection to nature and the region can be felt in every bite.
