The story
In the heart of Waldenbuch, Gasthof Krone combines historic charm with a Michelin-starred kitchen. The building itself carries history: in the 18th century, poets Schiller and Goethe left their names on a tabletop in the entrance hall, still visible today. The warm, inviting atmosphere sets the stage for a dining experience that is both rooted and refined.
Chef de Cuisine Erik Metzger, named Germany’s youngest Michelin-starred chef in 2017, leads the kitchen with a clear philosophy. His style is inspired by modern French-European cuisine, but the result is deliberately reduced and harmonious – no unnecessary frills, just exceptional product quality. The menu changes with the seasons, always fresh, seasonal, and regional. The result is classic cuisine that surprises with its precision and clarity.
The Gasthof Krone has been awarded one star by the Guide Michelin, which praises the “sympathetic inn that fits perfectly into the region” and notes that Metzger’s dishes are “pleasantly reduced, harmonious combinations without unnecessary gimmicks.” The award is a natural reflection of the kitchen’s consistent commitment to quality.
Host Matthias Gugeler is the soul of the house, providing personal, competent service and expert wine advice. The restaurant’s wine list is carefully curated, and the team is a proud member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. Guests can also dine outdoors in the idyllic garden by the brook, or book a private room for celebrations.
The midday menu offers the same high-quality cooking at a more accessible price point – a perfect way to experience the Krone’s classic cuisine in a relaxed setting. Whether for a special occasion or a quiet lunch, Gasthof Krone delivers genuine, memorable hospitality.
