The story

Restaurant Alter Pfarrhof in Wernberg-Köblitz: Historic German Kitchen

A Three-Century Foundation

Restaurant Alter Pfarrhof anchors itself in Wernberg-Köblitz as a steadfast example of German cuisine housed within a 1700s structure. Court clerk Franz Samuel von Reinhardt originally commissioned the building, which later served as a parish farm and municipal library before a comprehensive 2000 renovation carved out the current dining room and vaulted wine cellar. The Schlemmer Atlas recognized this careful preservation alongside the property’s commitment to steady culinary standards. Visitors now walk past the restored timber-framed stadel to reach a space designed for quiet conversation.

The Chef and the Kitchen

Alexander Wagmann oversees a menu that treats German cooking as both a daily necessity and a refined craft. Patrons typically begin with the potato-leek cream soup finished with a heavy cream cap and toasted croutons. The main courses rotate between stuffed spinach-and-rucola gnocchi in tomato-sage cream and Argentinian rump steak paired with cognac-pepper sauce. This balance ensures the kitchen stays rooted in familiar flavors while maintaining precise execution.

The Dining Room and Terrace

Polished wooden tables and woven wicker chairs create a relaxed layout inside the main hall. Summer service moves outdoors to the sun terrace, where large canvas umbrellas shield diners from direct light while they enjoy a glass of wine. The vaulted cellar below accommodates groups of up to seventy guests for weddings or corporate events. Every detail reinforces the owner’s belief that food fulfills a basic requirement while dining elevates that moment into something worth remembering.
