The story
On the North Sea island of Sylt, Sansibar has long been a destination in its own right. This Michelin-recommended restaurant in Westerland’s Rantum district is known for its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and a menu that celebrates seasonal, international flavours without pretence.
Since 12:00 each day, guests can choose from the Tageskarte, a selection of lighter daytime dishes. From 17:30, the Abendkarte takes over with daily recommendations for dinner – and both menus remain available until 23:00. The restaurant’s most-loved classics, described simply as “die heißgeliebten SANSIBAR Gerichte,” are served throughout the day, ensuring that whatever time you arrive, the kitchen is ready.
The wine list is a major draw in its own right. Sansibar offers an extensive by-the-glass selection that changes regularly, with detailed, approachable tasting notes. You might find a crisp 2024er Manz Weissburgunder from Rheinhessen, a powerful 2016er Markus Schneider red from the Pfalz, or a classic 2018er Léoville Barton from Bordeaux. The list balances German and international bottles, with options for every course and budget.
The restaurant itself is part of a larger Sansibar brand that includes fashion stores and a wine hall, but the dining room remains the heart of the operation. Reservations for the indoor area are taken by phone from 12:00, with two seating slots: 17:30–19:30 and 20:00 until open end. Walk-in availability is possible, but booking ahead is wise – especially during the busy summer season.
For those who want a taste of Sansibar at home, the restaurant also offers a curated selection of products: house-made condiments like mango-horseradish cream and fig mustard, plus oils, vinegars, and conservas. It’s a small window into the kitchen’s philosophy – clear, bold flavours, sourced and prepared with care.
Whether you come for the seasonal international cooking, the exceptional wine list, or simply the relaxed island atmosphere, Sansibar delivers an experience that feels both special and effortlessly comfortable.
