The story
Restaurant Gut Altona brings traditional German cuisine to the quiet outskirts of Wildeshausen, where the Ahrmann family has guided guests through five generations since 1888. Johann Heinrich Ahrmann purchased the forest and mill estate that year, establishing a guesthouse that eventually expanded into a full hotel by 1900. The property now sits peacefully among lakes and woodlands just outside the historic town center. This enduring commitment to hospitality earned the kitchen a 1.5 ladle recognition from the Schlemmer Atlas for its clever blend of classic and hearty fare.
The kitchen draws directly from the estate grounds to prepare regional German cuisine. Asparagus arrives fresh from their own cultivated plots, while wild game comes from managed local hunts. Guests often order the crispy roasted goose breast served with apple red cabbage and potato dumplings, or the braised venison hind leg prepared alongside sweet marconuts. Plant-based dinners feature roasted cauliflower steaks paired with mushroom ragouts and creamy potatoes.
Visitors enter a space designed to feel like a refuge from daily routines. The dining rooms balance polished renovations with rustic architectural elements inherited from the former milling operation. Servers pour selections from a carefully curated wine list alongside crisp local pilsners. Meals frequently conclude with Georgs hausgemachter Apfel-Likör, a homemade apple liqueur crafted on site to match the estate’s grounded character.
