The story

Restaurant Mathes, Wincheringen: Modern French cuisine on the Moselle | Wattafork

Restaurant Mathes

Since 1949, Restaurant Mathes has been a fixture along the Moselle wine route. What began as a post-war reconstruction by Jim and Maisy Mathes Raus has evolved into a family legacy, now in its third generation. Bob Mathes, alongside his wife Sarah, took the reins in early 2023, bringing a fresh vision while honouring the traditions that built the house. The kitchen is led by young chef Ivan Lemanski, who works with seasonal, regional ingredients—many from the restaurant’s own garden—to create Modern French cuisine that feels both rooted and alive.

The setting is part of the experience. The restaurant’s terrace looks directly onto the Moselle, offering a calm, scenic backdrop for lunch or dinner. Inside, the dining room is warm and unfussy, letting the food and the view speak. The team of eight keeps things personal and attentive, and the wine list remains firmly anchored in the local vineyards—a quiet, confident complement to the cooking.

The menu changes regularly, but certain signatures endure. The “Friture de la Moselle”—a classic Moselle-style fried fish—and the oven-baked pike in regional Riesling sauce are dishes that have marked the house for decades. Alongside them, the current carte reveals a more modern ambition: a flambéed langoustine with celery millefeuille and dashi-infused bisque, or a grilled wild turbot fillet with sautéed artichoke and Buddha’s hand beurre blanc. The Gastronomic menu stretches to nine courses, while the more compact Miseler menu offers a three-step introduction built on the restaurant’s classics.

This balance of tradition and modernity has not gone unnoticed. In 2026, Restaurant Mathes received a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its consistent quality and the thoughtful evolution underway in the kitchen. It is a place where a family’s love for cooking—and for this corner of Luxembourg—remains the quiet engine of every plate.

After 80 years in business, Mathes is putting the spotlight on youth and modernity by entrusting its kitchens to young chef Ivan Lemanski. While tradition remains on the menu with Moselle-style fried fish and pike in Riesling, personally we were more won over by the more daring dishes such as the perfectly cut and seasoned Riofrio caviar served on beef tartare. The celery galette is seasoned to perfection. All this can be enjoyed in a plush setting overlooking the Moselle. One more point and the second toque goes on.
