The story
At Gambero Rosso da Domenico in Eibelstadt, just outside Würzburg, the cooking is inseparable from the man behind it. Chef Domenico’s philosophy is rooted in his childhood between Würzburg and the Italian south, shaped by a Calabrian mother who taught him to waste nothing and a Sicilian father who made hospitality instinctive. That background is the quiet engine of the kitchen.
The restaurant sits by the yacht harbour in Eibelstadt, offering a relaxed atmosphere that matches the precision of the food. The interior is Italian in character, with thoughtful details that signal care without fuss. Domenico describes his cooking as playful without gimmickry, idea-rich with substance – dishes of original purity driven by a conscious devotion to flavour intensity. The cuisine is Italian and Mediterranean at its core, but the execution is personal and refined.
Gambero Rosso da Domenico holds a Michelin Recommended award for 2025 and has carried a Bib Gourmand designation since 2011 – the only Italian restaurant in the region to do so. These honours reflect consistency and value in a kitchen that has long prioritised substance over slogans. Domenico is candid about culinary clichés: he avoids worn-out words like “quality” and “passion” because he believes they have been hollowed out. Instead, he lets his plates speak.
The menu changes with the seasons, and two fixed tasting paths give structure to the experience. The Teresuzza menu is named after Domenico’s mother, while the Domenico menu reinterprets traditional Italian cooking with modern touches, bringing together rich and humble components on one plate. Ingredients are chosen for their integrity – a Tropea onion from Calabria or a Pachino tomato from Sicily are treated as small treasures, imported directly and respected fully.
The wine list is equally personal. Every bottle is selected by Domenico, many from small producers he has visited himself. The wines are imported directly, which keeps the quality high and the pricing fair. A small enoteca on site offers bottles to take away at the same prices.
Beyond the dining room, Gambero Rosso da Domenico caters private events and parties, making the restaurant available for daytime functions by arrangement. The team also runs an online shop and has published a cookbook – a family biography of sorts, born during the pandemic and now in a limited second edition. Whether for a quiet dinner or a celebration, the welcome here is genuine and unhurried.
