The story
Alibertos is the realisation of a homecoming. After years working in hospitality and as a sommelier on Santorini, George Badogiannis returned to his hometown of Chania with a clear idea: to create a restaurant that expressed his vision without constraints. The name itself means “free person”. In August 2020, with a small, passionate team and just ten tables, he opened the doors of Alibertos in the suburb of Kounoupidiana.
The menu is guided by what the restaurant calls “free spirit gastronomy”. It draws on the flavours of Crete—local greens, mizithra cheese, staka, and wild herbs—while giving equal weight to premium beef cuts. Guests can order oysters and beetroot salad alongside beef tartare, bone marrow, or a Wagyu Kagoshima A5 striploin. Several cuts of USA Black Angus are offered, from ribeye to picanha. For larger groups, Alibertos also offers private chef menus that range from Cretan classics like lamb tsigariasto to seafood and Greek BBQ spreads.
The wine programme is central to the experience. Alibertos’ walk-in cellar holds more than 500 labels, spanning regions from Sitia in eastern Crete to Patagonia. This depth and quality earned the restaurant a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2024. The team is happy to build a tasting menu around your preferences, and diners can also join the restaurant’s wine club. Whether you come for a glass of something local or a rare bottle from afar, the cellar is designed to surprise and satisfy.
