The story
At Zelna Borbisztró in Balatonfüred, wine and food are two parts of a single whole. The bistro is an extension of Zelna Borászat, a winery built around the conviction that wine becomes special when it connects experiences. The same philosophy guides the kitchen: produce is sourced from their own Kiskert garden, and the menu changes with the season.
The restaurant itself is a calm, nature-facing space on Zákonyi Ferenc utca. Guests come for the kind of meal that feels anchored to the Balaton Uplands — unhurried, precise, and rooted in the land. The Michelin inspectors recognised this approach, awarding the bistro a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026 for its thoughtful, terroir-driven cooking.
From the starters menu, dishes such as a duck consommé or crispy pickled cucumber show a kitchen that respects tradition without being bound by it. Among the main courses, you might find pork tenderloin with lecsó and potato, duck breast with fennel, beetroot and beluga lentils, or pike-perch in a spiced crust with minted potatoes. There is also a vegetarian saffron risotto with courgette and local cheese from Vászoly. Each dish is designed to pair with the estate’s own wines — a natural fit given that the winery operates just a few kilometres away.
Wine is not an afterthought here. The bistro offers two guided tasting flights: a Fresh Tasting, built around bright, approachable wines like the Bio Olaszrizling and a Zweigelt rosé; and a Selection Tasting, which delves into single-vineyard bottlings from parcels such as Berekszél, Farkó-kő and Penke. For a deeper immersion, the Borvacsora (wine dinner) pairs a multi-course menu with wines chosen to highlight each ingredient — a slow, intimate evening that the restaurant describes as “simultaneously gastronomic and emotional”.
Zelna is also a place to stay. The estate includes apartments, and the programme of dűlőtúrák (vineyard hikes) and wine tastings lets visitors explore the landscape that shapes every bottle. The bistro’s kitchen garden supplies much of the produce, closing the loop between soil and plate.
For anyone seeking Hungarian cuisine that speaks clearly of its place — and a wine list that does the same — Zelna Borbisztró offers one of the most coherent experiences on Lake Balaton’s northern shore.
