The story
Kistücsök Food&Room in Balatonszárszó has anchored its regional Hungarian cooking in local sourcing since owner Balázs Csapody opened the doors nearly thirty years ago. He introduced a commitment to seasonal ingredients and nearby producers that reshaped how the lake area approaches food. That approach recently earned the establishment a notable Gault&Millau rating, confirming how consistently the kitchen balances tradition with seasonal precision. The entire team now guides the daily menu alongside chef László Jahni.
Signature creations like the fermented cucumber cream soup and venison braised in a rich vegetable sauce remain central to the kitchen’s identity. Duck legs served with cabbage noodles and the named apple cake have earned steady loyalty over the years. The current tasting lineup also features sturgeon paired with cabbage variations and a light butter sauce, alongside fully plant based courses such as young cabbage steaks and morel preparations. Each dish relies on clearly defined regional produce rather than heavy sauces.
Diners can reserve seats at the intimate eight course chef’s table, where twenty four guests gather around an open kitchen. The layout encourages conversation between visitors and the culinary team while they discuss ingredient origins and wine pairings. A sprawling underground cellar supports these selections, offering guided tastings that match local vintages to the day’s regional cuisine offerings. The relaxed pace turns a formal degustation into a comfortable evening meal.
