The story
For more than three decades, Kistücsök has been a fixture on the shores of Lake Balaton. Owner Balázs Csapody took over the restaurant as a young man, driven by ideas and dreams that have since crystallized into a clear philosophy: to tell the story of the region through its food and wine. The result is a restaurant that feels both rooted in tradition and attuned to the present, a place where familiar Hungarian flavors are presented with a contemporary touch.
This commitment to locality and seasonality earned Kistücsök a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, recognizing its good quality, good value cooking. The restaurant’s approach is built on close relationships with local producers, fishermen, and winemakers, and that ethos extends to every plate. The kitchen, led by chef László Jahni, highlights the region’s bounty with dishes that are direct and flavorful. Iconic offerings include a sour cucumber cream soup, a venison dish with hunter-style sauce, and duck leg served with cabbage and cvekedli noodles. A dedicated vegan menu is also available, blending tradition with modern culinary trends.
The dining experience extends beyond the main restaurant. The Chef’s Room is an intimate space for up to 24 guests, where seasonal menus are prepared in an open kitchen. Here, diners can watch the chefs at work and chat about ingredients, preparation, and wine pairings, turning the meal into a relaxed, shared exploration of gastronomy. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, a style the Gault&Millau guide has described as "leisure dining" – a comfortable, gourmet experience.
Kistücsök is more than a restaurant; it is also a four-star hotel and a delicatessen, Kistücsök DELI, where guests can take home products from the restaurant and its network of local suppliers. It is a place designed for lingering, whether for a single meal or a few days by the lake.
