The story
La Cucina brings award-winning Italian cooking to the heart of Lucerne, operating successfully since 1996 under the Astoria Hotel. Owner Urs Karli founded the space after falling deeply in love with the country’s food and lifestyle during his own travels. Marco Colucci from Bari runs the open kitchen with steady precision, while Roberto Mazzitelli manages the floor as maître d’ and resident carver of truffles and Parmesan. Every staff member communicates exclusively in Italian, which keeps the atmosphere grounded in southern European hospitality.
The menu relies on reliable Italian classics rather than fleeting trends. Thinly sliced carpaccio di tonno arrives dressed simply with arugula and olive oil. Spaghetti alle vongole and maltagliati tossed with tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and aged cheese anchor the lunch and dinner offerings. When guests ask for spaghetti carbonara, they receive the traditional version using guanciale instead of cream. Seasonal produce receives equal attention, particularly white asparagus paired with a poached egg and melted parmesan that completely replaces heavy hollandaise. This steady execution consistently earns the kitchen 14 points from Gault&Millau.
Diners fill the spacious dining area for two separate evening services. Classic radio tracks from southern Italy play continuously while waiters navigate between crowded tables. Birthday celebrations happen frequently enough that sparklers and slices of house-made tiramisu become standard procedure. The constant movement and chatter reflect a venue built for long meals and genuine warmth rather than quiet formality.
