The story

FELIX Kitchen&Bar Budapest: Mediterranean Dining in a Historic Riverfront Setting

The historic setting and atmosphere

FELIX Kitchen&Bar in Budapest delivers refined Mediterranean cooking from within the former Várkert Kiosk, a neo-Renaissance structure designed by architect Miklós Ybl along the Danube promenade. Recognized with a 14.5 rating from Gault&Millau, the venue channels the measured elegance of early twentieth-century European hotels. Large windows frame uninterrupted views of Buda Castle while guests sit at tables dressed with custom blue-rimmed china and heavy Pickard & Wielpütz silverware. The space balances historical grandeur with modern comfort, offering a quiet refuge from the bustling riverbank.

The chef and the kitchen

Executive Chef Dániel Katona anchors the menu with French technique and Spanish warmth after training in France and spending six years working alongside Jordi Cruz. His approach to Mediterranean cooking relies heavily on the Josper grill to build char and depth into seasonal ingredients. The team is equally known for precise meat preparation, particularly a double-cut veal schnitzel coated in golden panko that stays crisp while remaining tender inside. Every plate reflects an emphasis on high quality ingredients and careful pacing.

Wines, cocktails, and desserts

Master Sommelier Tamás Czinki oversees a cellar focused on rare international vintages and carefully aged selections. Above him, bartender Gergő Piller crafts drinks for the main floor and the exclusive HIDE speakeasy located directly beneath the dining room. The meal often concludes with a theatrical presentation of aranygaluska, baked fresh in a cast iron skillet before being brought to the table. A black ceramic pitcher pours warm vanilla custard over the walnut dumplings, finished with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream.
