The story
Onyx, located on Budapest’s grand Vörösmarty tér, isn’t just a restaurant—it is a singular, evolving story told through modern cuisine. The team describes it as “the restaurant of the future. A possible future. As we see it.” This is not marketing hyperbole but the literal blueprint for a meal here.
The dining experience unfolds across one evening in 11 distinct steps, guiding guests from the earliest days of restaurant dining in 1765 to a speculative future centuries from now. You begin with dishes like a vegetable broth referencing the first restaurant and canned fish from 1810, moving through pivotal moments in history—World War II, the Space Race, 9/11, and the dawn of globalization.
As the evening progresses, the familiar past gives way to the unknown. The menu ventures into the 22nd and 23rd centuries with courses inspired by concepts like the Bioreactor and the Phalanstery. The final chapters, such as 3016's "New Dawn," take the narrative to Mars, asking what flavors might accompany humanity in the centuries ahead. Courses are presented at a communal table seating sixteen, designed to foster conversation and a sense of shared discovery.
The cuisine is modern and intellectual, with options that include protein-driven dishes like lamb with labneh and ostrich steak, alongside plant-forward choices such as oat tempeh with yeast hazelnut cream. Wine pairings are available in both international and local Hungarian selections.
This ambition, blending historical narrative with gastronomic speculation, has earned Onyx a Michelin Recommended status, marking it as a destination for those seeking a restaurant that challenges the very definition of a dinner out. It is a community experience on the edge of the future, right in the heart of Budapest.
