The story

Trattoria Toscana delivers authentic Tuscan cooking along the Budapest Danube

A quarter century of direct sourcing

Trattoria Toscana brings authentic Tuscan cooking to Budapest along the banks of the Danube. The restaurant opened twenty-five years ago under Ferenc Baji, becoming one of the first local kitchens to import ingredients straight from Italy with official certificates. This commitment to provenance anchors the menu, allowing chefs to prepare dishes that rely on regional produce rather than local substitutions. Longtime host Stefano Bartolacelli guides guests through the daily rhythm of an Italian kitchen where quality dictates every decision, a dedication recognized by the Gault & Millau 11.5 score.

Charcoal grills and wood-fired ovens

The Florence steak arrives at the table prepared according to traditional methods, featuring premium beef cuts seared over hardwood coals. Dough turns into Roman-style pizza inside a wood-fired chamber, where a thin base supports generous toppings without heavy browning. Slow-braised ossobuco rests atop creamy risotto, and desserts close the evening with a structured tiramisù. These techniques require patience, yet they anchor the restaurant’s reputation for reliable Italian cooking.

Rustic interiors overlooking the river

The venue occupies a prime stretch along Belgrád rakpart, sitting exactly midway between the Elizabeth and Liberty bridges. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping sightlines toward Gellért Hill and the water, while a spacious terrace extends the dining footprint during warmer months. Inside, exposed materials and warm lighting recreate a familiar trattoria environment where guests can watch dough being stretched near the kitchen pass. An extensive wine cellar complements the Tuscan menus with over one hundred labels, many sourced from organic or biodynamic vineyards across Europe.
