The csárda (inn) holds a special place in the hearts of both Hungarian diners and tourists so it’s a real treat to come across one that gets it just right. In the resort area of Csopak, off Route 71, a distinctive building comes into view: small millhouse-style windows, a still-operational water wheel, whitewashed walls, and a thatched roof evoking a gentler, bygone era. Inside, there’s no heavy-handed csárda kitsch – instead, natural wood furniture, colourful dressers, rustic tilework, and a clay oven set the tone. This well-judged blend of past and present carries through to the kitchen. Compared to today’s trend of ultra-trim bistro menus, the selection is long – but refreshingly short for a traditional csárda . There are no outlandish ingredients, just classic dishes with the occasional clever twist. Portions are generous, the plating modern and elegant, without straining the boundaries of the genre. The duck ragout soup we tried was flawlessly flavoured, and the floating island was cool and creamy, free of fridge taste or excess sugar. Service was polite and well coordinated. In summer at Lake Balaton, staffing can be a challenge – while a minor lack of polish was noticeable – it didn’t detract. The wine list focuses on Csopak’s signature welschriesling and a handful of well-chosen bottles from local producers – a grounded and fitting approach. Vígmolnár Csárda strikes a fine balance between csárda nostalgia and the expectations of a modern diner.
