The story
The name Anyukám Mondta – “My Mother Said” – sets the tone: honest, personal, and rooted in the feel of home. Behind this restaurant in Encs, a small town in northeast Hungary, is a couple who worked in Italy as a head waiter and a chef, then spent two and a half years in New York before returning home. They started with a corner bar, then a corner pizzeria, and finally the restaurant that now holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand award.
The Bib Gourmand, given for good quality and good value cooking, is a recognition the team has held since 2023 and proudly retained. The award speaks to what the restaurant does best: turning classic Italian-Mediterranean cuisine into something personal and precise.
The partners make their own bread, syrups, sausages, and even pickles – small gestures that show the kitchen’s care. The menu combines mandatory elements of Italian-Mediterranean cooking with freely chosen experiments, always built on fresh, local ingredients. The result is a style that feels both familiar and surprising.
The restaurant’s interior and outdoor seating make it a comfortable place for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is direct and welcoming, reflecting the owners’ belief that cooking without heart is uninteresting.
Anyukám Mondta is located at Petőfi utca 57 in Encs, a short drive from the city center. The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 22:00, closed on Sundays. Advance booking is strongly recommended.
