The story
Lokal at the Lake brings a farm-to-fork philosophy to the shores of Lake Balaton, just 100 metres from the Fonyódliget beach in Fonyód. The restaurant is the latest chapter in a story that began in Nagykanizsa, where the team behind it has long run a producers' market. The name "Lokal" reflects real relationships: suppliers are friends and partners, and the commitment to local, seasonal ingredients is unwavering.
The kitchen works with ingredients sourced almost entirely from within a 90-kilometre radius. Beef, fish, eggs, buffalo meat, game, mushrooms, vegetables, fruits, honey, artisan cheeses, smoked goods, and sourdough bread all come from nearby farms. The wine list features biodynamic and natural wines from Hungarian winemakers, and the house Lokalista Lager is brewed at Balatonszentgyörgy. Non-alcoholic offerings include house-made syrups, kombuchas, producer fruit juices, and freshly roasted OneEleven coffee.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, inspired by the Balaton shoreline, Zala roots, and the team's travels and home. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, and is open for coffee throughout the day. With its dedication to quality and seasonality, Lokal at the Lake has earned a Michelin Recommended award, a natural recognition of its thoughtful contemporary Hungarian cuisine. The menu changes constantly, reflecting what is best and freshest from the surrounding land and waters.
