The story

Am Mahrbach Königsdorf: Award-Winning Austrian Fine Dining in South Burgenland

The Kitchen and Its Founders

Am Mahrbach in Königsdorf delivers precise Austrian fine dining through the partnership of Philipp Kroboth and Cathrin Maric. Philipp transitioned from law to become a certified Haubenkoch, while Cathrin oversees service and grounds operations alongside her veterinary physiotherapy practice. They manage a working farmstead that has supported local agriculture for more than two centuries, and their disciplined approach recently earned a 14.5 score from Gault&Millau. A shallow stream named after the property flows past the courtyard, dictating the seasonal harvest schedule.

Signature Plates and Foraged Ingredients

The tasting menu structures forest foraging into sequential courses. Early servings present a carrot macaron paired with pickled trout, leading into handmade agnolotti dressed with herb oyster mushrooms and parmesan foam. Entrees alternate between river catfish wrapped in an aromatic crust and slow roasted pork belly balanced against sweet onion and cherry. Raw honey from the estate apiary appears in savory glazes and finished chocolate desserts.

The Farm Setting and Service Cadence

Dining rooms open Wednesday through Saturday evening for seated reservations. Guests sit among mature apple trees and open meadows while watching staff coordinate between the stove and garden beds. Service pacing aligns with the preparation of nettle tortelloni and wild garlic pillows served alongside locally raised lamb. The quiet architecture of contemporary Austrian cooking shines through when simple ingredients meet careful technique.

At Am Mahrbach, the two individualists Cathrin and Philipp Kroboth have created a paradise. She is a veterinary physiotherapist and a cheerfully upbeat server, he a lawyer and decorated chef. It is a paradise where the two, in a convivial spirit and with thoughtful local wine pairings, share with you finely crafted, perfectly executed small bites (such as carrot macarons with pickled trout) to start, followed by agnolotti with herb oyster mushrooms, parmesan foam and mushroom essence, river catfish baked with an herb crust and excellently accompanied by lentils, fennel and brandade raviolo, confited pork belly with onion and cherry (what a symphony of flavors!), or poached strawberries with whole-grain crumble and yogurt sorbet. Thank you for that! Address: Apfelstraße 4, 7563 Königsdorf, Austria. Contact: 0660 5536549 willkommen@am-mahrbach.at https://www.am-mahrbach.at/. Opening hours: Wed–Sat 17:00–23:00.
