The story
Sha-Roe Bistro occupies a charming building in the village of Clonegal, County Carlow, not far from Bunclody. Since opening, it has earned a loyal following and a remarkable collection of awards. The Michelin Bib Gourmand, awarded for good quality, good value cooking, has been a constant presence: the restaurant held it annually from 2008 to 2017, and continues to hold it today, as recognised in the 2026 guide.
The Bib Gourmand is one of many honours. Sha-Roe Bistro was named Best Newcomer of the Year by Georgina Campbell’s Guide in 2007, and later won Best Atmospheric Restaurant (2010) and Best Chef (2011) from the same guide. In 2017, it was voted Best Restaurant in Leinster at the Irish Restaurant Association Awards. Each award reflects a different strength – the cooking, the atmosphere, the consistency.
