The story

The Church Dublin: Irish Cuisine in a Grade I Listed Historic Building

A Grand Restoration

The Church delivers authentic Irish cuisine in Dublin, housed within a Grade I listed building that originally opened its doors in 1701. Sir William Robinson and Thomas Burgh designed the structure using convex quadrants and an Ionic limestone entrance, features that survive intact today. Brendan Flynn has managed the property since 2007, overseeing a careful seven year restoration that preserved the galleried timber ceiling and original Corinthian reredos. This architectural landmark once hosted Arthur Guinness’s wedding and recorded baptisms for playwright Seán O’Casey and revolutionary Wolfe Tone.

The Kitchen and Seasonal Plates

Head Chef Sergiu Stoica guides the culinary program alongside Sous Chef Vali Amariei, sourcing produce from regional growers to maintain steady standards. The kitchen prepares straightforward dishes that highlight local ingredients while accommodating the high volume of visitors who pass through the doors. Diners have earned the establishment a Gault & Millau score of 14.5 for 2026, a rating that acknowledges both the food quality and the coordinated floor service. Irish cooking remains the core focus, balancing familiar preparations with precise execution and consistent pacing.

Distinct Rooms and Evening Rhythms

Guests navigate several separate venues, including the Main Bar, the sunlit Terrace, and the lower level Cellar Bar situated beneath the original nave. Traditional musicians take the stage every evening at six thirty, drawing crowds into the central space while other tables enjoy quieter conversation. The O’Casey Suite accommodates private functions that celebrate regional Irish fare alongside standard event catering. Staff members guide visitors between these zones, maintaining a relaxed pace that suits both quick lunches and extended visits.
