The story
Lady Helen, holding a Michelin star since 2013, is one of Ireland’s most distinctive dining experiences. Set within the 260-year-old Georgian Manor House of Mount Juliet Estate near Thomastown, the restaurant serves modern Irish cuisine that is, in the restaurant’s own words, “pure, indulgent, joyful.”
Executive Head Chef John Kelly leads the kitchen. A Kilkenny native, Kelly trained at some of the world’s finest restaurants, including Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin, The Fat Duck in England, Tetsuya’s in Sydney, and Le Mas Candille in France. His cooking philosophy centres on “purity and balance.” He describes his approach: “We strive to create food that guests can understand but also feel a sense of wonder about; that they can relate to but still experience little elements of surprise.”
The menus are guided by the seasons and the bounty of the estate itself. Each dish is pared back to let the ingredients speak, delivering extraordinary flavour through simplicity. Lady Helen offers an 8-course Signature Tasting Menu and a vegetarian counterpart, both available Tuesday to Saturday from 6:30 pm.
The dining room reflects the manor’s history – Lady Helen McCalmont’s legendary parties at Mount Juliet inspired the restaurant’s spirit of fun and generosity. The wine cellar is equally impressive, with over 130 wines and champagnes, from small-batch organic vineyards to classic Old World selections, each chosen to complement Kelly’s vibrant modern cuisine.
F&B Manager Aga Kubinska, awarded Best Restaurant Manager in Leinster in 2022 and 2023, ensures the front-of-house experience matches the kitchen’s ambitions. Together, the team delivers a refined yet warm evening that has earned 4 AA Rosettes alongside its Michelin star.
For those seeking modern Irish cuisine at its finest, Lady Helen offers a memorable evening in the heart of County Kilkenny.
