The story
In the coastal town of Westport, Co. Mayo, An Port Mór has been a fixture of the Irish dining scene since 2009. Chef-owner Frankie Mallon named the restaurant after the Irish translation of his hometown, Blackwatertown, Armagh. Here he serves modern Irish cuisine that has earned a Michelin Plate award for more than a decade – a recognition that speaks to the consistency and quality of what comes from his kitchen.
Mallon’s love of food began in childhood, skinning eels he caught from Lough Neagh. He trained in acclaimed kitchens including Paul Rankin’s Roscoff’s, the Tara Hotel in London, and Cap Vernet in Paris. His style is rooted in classical training: “simple is often best, but that takes skill.” The team treats every ingredient with care, from Clew Bay scallops and Connemara seafood to Achill Mountain lamb and artisan cheeses from suppliers like Silke Cropp’s Corleggy.
The atmosphere is warm, comforting, and welcoming, with friendly, efficient service. The menu changes daily, driven by the best seasonal produce. Expect dishes such as Grilled Turbot with Sweet Cured Pork Belly, Salmon and Leek Terrine, or a 38oz Tomahawk steak with Café de Paris butter. Two set menus – the €44 Néifinn Bheag and the €72 Cruach Phádraig – offer a choice of starters, mains, and desserts, all built on the finest Irish ingredients. Breads are baked in-house; desserts are made from scratch. An Port Mór is a true taste of the Wild Atlantic Way, where classic technique meets the rich larder of the West of Ireland.
