The story
In 1998, three brothers – Alessandro, Massimo, and Tiziano – returned to Piedmont after cooking around the world. They chose Serravalle Langhe, a corner of Alta Langa that was then still finding its voice, and opened Trattoria La Coccinella. Their idea was simple: bring to the table the best from local farmers, breeders, and fishermen. They built a short supply chain, putting the people behind the ingredients front and centre. More than two decades later, that same identity holds. The brothers work quietly – sottovoce, as they say – letting the food speak for itself. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, awarding the trattoria a Recommendation for its consistent, honest cooking.
Massimo runs the kitchen, while Alessandro and Tiziano look after the dining room. The cuisine is firmly Piedmontese, but not static. It marries tradition with contemporary touches – an “altalena” (swing) between the flavours of home and the collisions of modern gastronomy. Fish comes only from the Mediterranean. Vegetables are strictly seasonal. Meats and cheeses carry the stories of local herdsmen who choose to stay on this land. Nothing is forced. The menus change with the seasons: a spring menu, a sea menu, and a truffle menu when the season allows. Each dish is a step into the history of these hills.
The name La Coccinella (the ladybug) suits the place: small, unassuming, and welcoming. The brothers describe it as a home for anyone who seeks one, even for just an evening. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried, with outdoor seating in good weather. The wine list is tactile and thoughtful, speaking many grape languages. It’s the kind of trattoria where you close your eyes and smell the cooking – and that smell is home.
