The story
Lalibera is a restaurant that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is: a place where the refinement of a proper restaurant meets the convivial spirit of a Piedmontese osteria. The name, written as one word just as it's spoken, says it all. Owner Flavia Boffa has been at the helm for thirteen years, and her hand is felt in every detail.
The location is on via Pertinace in the San Giovanni quarter of Alba, a quiet neighborhood just steps from the main street, Via Vittorio Emanuele. A glass window reveals the kitchen and the chefs at work. Inside, the lighting is warm: a vintage Louis Poulsen “Artichoke” lamp from the 1930s, pendant lights, and Arne Jacobsen chairs. Walls are hung with paintings by Alba-born artist Pinot Gallizio and food photography by Luigi Ferrando. The cheese counter is generous; the label-covered wall of producers and grappas tells a story of its own.
The cooking is direct, without frills – a phrase the restaurant uses itself. The menu is based on Piedmontese tradition, with daily variations according to season and the chef's creativity. From the regular line-up: carne cruda battuta al coltello (beef chopped by knife), vitello tonnato, agnolotti del plin, tajarin with veal ragù, and finanziera. In season, the raviolone alla Nino Bergese comes with white truffle from Alba. There are also seafood options – the fish comes from Antonio at Pescheria del Molo in Alba.
Ingredients are sourced with care. Meat comes from Parracone in Valdieri, a trusted butcher supplying Fassone Piemontese beef, cotechino, zampone, and tripe. Vegetables, herbs, and fruit come from the restaurant's own garden just outside town, supplemented by market finds. Cheeses are from small artisan producers, selected and aged by Franco of Saluzzo, who supplies aged DOP cheeses, tume, Raschera, Roccaverano, and fontina for fonduta.
The wine list is described as a book – extensive, with a focus on Piedmont and beyond. Guests are welcome to order by the glass, with the bottle left on the table. It's no surprise that Lalibera has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction: the precision in sourcing and cooking, the care in the dining room, and the sincerity of the experience speak for themselves.
With its warm atmosphere, thoughtful design, and cooking rooted in the Langhe, Lalibera is a restaurant that rewards a return visit – and a second look at that wine list.
