The story
In the heart of Amalfi, just steps from the ancient Arsenali della Repubblica, La Caravella has been a beacon of fine dining since 1959. It was here that the Dipino family earned the very first Michelin star in Southern Italy—a recognition it has held ever since. Today, chef and patron Antonio Dipino, alongside his daughter, continues the tradition his parents began more than sixty years ago. The restaurant’s own website describes it simply: “La prima stella Michelin del Sud Italia, tra le stelle Michelin più antiche d’Italia.”
La Caravella is more than a restaurant; it is a “Ristorante Museo.” The dining rooms are filled with works by the most celebrated ceramic artists of the Amalfi Coast, forming one of the world’s most important private collections of local art. In the intimate Salottino Andy Warhol, the pop-art icon himself dined in the 1960s as a guest of Gore Vidal. This is a place where art, history, and gastronomy converge.
The kitchen’s philosophy is clear: “Simplicity is the most difficult goal to achieve in cooking.” Antonio Dipino’s cooking is rooted in the Campanian and Mediterranean tradition, relying on few ingredients of exceptional quality. The menu highlights the best of the local sea—pezzogna, swordfish, tuna—alongside the iconic sfusato lemon of Amalfi, tomatoes that appear in half the dishes, basil, and bread from Agerola. Standout preparations include a pear cooked in Aglianico wine with raw nassa shrimp and ricotta, and a celebrated lemon soufflé. Eight tasting menus, including a seasonal option and a gluten-free path, allow guests to explore these authentic flavours.
The “Cantina delle Rarità” is a destination in itself. Housed in a 17th-century storeroom with controlled temperature and humidity, it holds thousands of bottles, from mythical labels like La Tâche to small biodynamic producers. Wine Spectator awarded it the “Best Award of Excellence,” and The World of Fine Wine gave it three stars. Sommelier Tonino guides guests through pairings that span rare Champagnes, aged reds, and crisp whites. The adjoining Enoteca offers rare bottles for purchase, shipped worldwide.
La Caravella also houses an Art Gallery, born in 2009, showcasing exclusive ceramics by master artisans. Guests can visit the Wine-Gallery daily (except Tuesday) by appointment. It is a place where every detail—the handmade pottery on the tables, the paintings on the ceilings, the family’s dedication—tells a story of Amalfi’s culture and hospitality.
