The story
In the historic heart of Assisi, steps from the Basilica of Santa Chiara and Piazza del Comune, La Locanda del Cardinale occupies a setting that few restaurants can match. The dining rooms are carved into an ancient Roman settlement dating back to 75 BC, its original mosaic floors and archaeological fragments still visible beneath the 16th-century Palazzo del Cardinale. This is not a backdrop that competes with the food — it deepens it.
The kitchen focuses on modern Umbrian cuisine, built from a careful selection of raw ingredients and artisanal production. Fresh pasta, bread, desserts, and gelati are made in-house, and the team prioritises local producers alongside Slow Food presidia and protected-label products. The result is a menu that balances creativity with the region’s culinary traditions, without overwriting them.
The wine cellar holds over 1,000 labels, spanning Italian and international vintages, and the restaurant’s approach to service is both polished and unhurried — suitable for a working lunch or a candlelit dinner in the Roman rooms. Upstairs, the Piano Nobile retains 16th-century frescoes and is used for banquets and ceremonies.
La Locanda del Cardinale is recognised by the Michelin guide, a recommendation that reflects the consistency of its cooking and the integrity of its setting. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays.
