The story
Just two kilometres from Asti’s historic centre, Il Cavallo Scosso brings a young, dynamic energy to Piedmont’s dining scene. Chef-patron Enrico Pivieri leads the kitchen with a philosophy he calls “glocal” – grounding his cooking in the gastronomic identity of Monferrato while drawing freely on international influences, especially refined oriental touches. The result is a contemporary seafood restaurant that feels both rooted and adventurous.
The restaurant’s name, which translates to “the startled horse,” hints at the playful, surprising spirit on the plate. Pivieri’s approach is built on fresh, carefully sourced ingredients transformed into balanced, personality-rich creations. A signature dish, “Impressioni di Settembre,” has been a menu staple since 2018: a battuta of Fassona beef topped with a seared scampi and a sea urchin mayonnaise – a precise, elegant expression of the kitchen’s style.
Il Cavallo Scosso recently introduced “Le Pale Scosse,” a gourmet take on the Roman-style pala pizza. After years of research on leavened doughs, Pivieri developed a high-hydration, long-maturation recipe that yields a lighter, more digestible crust. These larger-than-average pizzas are always on the menu, available alongside or instead of the regular dishes – a fun, convivial option that refuses to compromise on quality. The restaurant describes it as “fun food” rather than fast food, and it’s already earning its own following.
The kitchen offers several tasting paths. The “Terra” and “Mare” seasons change with the warmer months, while a dedicated Tapas Menu presents ten small plates that travel from Piedmont to more distant shores, available Tuesday through Thursday. For lunch, a separate menu balances speed with refinement.
The dining room itself was thoroughly renovated in 2020, now offering airy, intimate spaces with hand-painted graphics and lush greenery. A cocktail list, conceived by sommelier and maître d’Adele Furno, complements the food. The attentive service and comfortable atmosphere have earned the restaurant a consistent 4.5-star rating from guests.
Il Cavallo Scosso’s recognition by the Michelin guide as a Recommended restaurant in 2026 is a fitting nod to its clear identity: a kitchen that respects tradition, experiments with confidence, and invites diners to share in that evolution, one plate at a time.
