The story
In the heart of Bergamo, just steps from the ancient walls, Lio Pellegrini offers an experience grounded in memory and craft. The kitchen draws on the gestures and flavors the chef witnessed as a boy in his mother Nila’s home, refusing to invent for the sake of novelty. “I have never allowed myself to invent anything at the stove,” he writes. Instead, he returns to those early lessons, refined by years alongside colleagues he considers masters, even if his own stubborn path sometimes diverged from theirs.
This philosophy translates into a modern cuisine that feels both personal and rooted. The daily menu changes, offering a choice of two dishes from the day’s carta—antipasti, primi, secondi—served during weekday lunch. The approach is direct, seasonal, and respectful of ingredients, never showy.
The setting enhances the meal. From May to September, a handful of tables are set in a south-facing garden, an internal green space that offers a quiet escape. Inside, the dining room is intimate, with a single 40-square-meter guest room reserved exclusively for restaurant patrons. It opens onto a balcony overlooking the garden and Parco Suardi, appointed with a king bed, travertine floors, and a ceiling lit by an artwork from Nicoletta Freti of Bergamo’s Accademia Carrara.
Lio Pellegrini has earned a Michelin recommendation, a recognition that aligns with its quiet, deliberate pursuit of quality. The wine list spans Italy and beyond, with particular attention to Champagne, and a boutique sells objects from the dining room—lamps, ceramics, glassware—for those who wish to take a piece of the atmosphere home.
