The story
Perched at 1,100 metres on the Salten plateau, a short cable-car ride from Bolzano, the Antica Locanda al Cervo – Landgasthof zum Hirschen is run by the Oberkofler family. Since 1935, women have shaped this place – the website speaks of “a woman’s world” and a tradition of landladies who have kept the heart of the hotel and restaurant beating. The setting is idyllic: meadows and forests, fresh air, and views that stretch across the Dolomites.
The restaurant calls itself a “Südtiroler Gasthaus” – a South Tyrolean inn where the kitchen honours local ingredients and time-honoured recipes. The Michelin Bib Gourmand award (2026) recognises the consistent quality and value of the cooking here. Sustainability is not a recent addition but a long-standing practice: the kitchen works with what the region provides, and the hotel holds a Michelin Green Star, a Sustainability South Tyrol certification, and international GSTC recognition. Diners can expect honest, flavourful South Tyrolean cuisine that reflects the land and the seasons.
The family’s grandmother already lived sustainably, and today that ethos extends from the kitchen to the vineyard, the cellar, and even the horse farm (the Unterwirt, with Haflingers). The inn has just 27 rooms, keeping things personal. For those who want to linger, the wellness area includes an infinity pool and sauna – a place to slow down after a day on the trails or the slopes. Whether you come for the Bib Gourmand meal, the mountain air, or the quiet rhythm of this women-led Gasthaus, the Hirschen offers a genuine slice of South Tyrol.
