The story
At Osteria Platzegg in San Michele, chef Herbert Hintner brings South Tyrolean classics and nearly forgotten regional dishes back to the table — without frills, but with genuine craftsmanship. The motto says it all: "Ehrlich. Einfach. Echt." Honest, simple, real.
This approach earned the restaurant a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award reserved for restaurants that offer good quality, good value cooking. It’s a fitting recognition for a kitchen that has been practising true hand-and-heart work for 40 years.
The restaurant sits in the historic walls of Ansitz Platzegg, right on the market square of St. Michael/Eppan. Guests can dine on the terrace, surrounded by the lively piazza, or inside the old manor’s rooms. The atmosphere is genuine South Tyrolean inn culture — a place to arrive, take a seat, and enjoy.
Hintner’s cooking is colourful, flavourful, and always fresh. The team buys ingredients directly from local farmers whenever possible. Respect for animal welfare, seasonality, and a clear rejection of throwaway culture are not trends here — they have been daily convictions for 30 years.
The menu focuses on traditional classics, made without additives or flavour enhancers. “Cooking is hand-and-heart work for me,” Hintner says. “Everything I know and can do goes into the dishes. The art is to take time and carefully choose the right ingredients. Only then does good taste emerge.”
The wine list is a journey through South Tyrol, with a special focus on the winemakers of Eppan — a fitting companion to this honest, classic cuisine.
