The story
On Via Marconi in the old quarter of Carloforte, Al Tonno di Corsa has been open since 1980. The name itself, which might sound peculiar to outsiders, is immediately understood by locals: "tonno di corsa" is the tuna caught in the traditional tuna traps, the tonnare, that have defined the island's fishing culture.
The restaurant occupies a classic Carloforte house, transformed to include an open kitchen where guests can watch the preparation of the dishes. The location, in the ancient cassinee district, with its stone staircases and narrow carruggi, carries the atmosphere of a past era. The restaurant is set in the historic centre, at number 47 Via Marconi, once called Via dello Stendardo, where a banner was raised at dawn.
The kitchen focuses on the flavours of the Tabarkin tradition. Antipasti highlight tuna in its classic forms: musciamme, bottarga, heart, and capunnadda. First courses include cascà of Tunisian origin, bobba seasoned with basil and marjoram, cassulli, and fresh pasta with rich seafood sauces. Second courses are built around the freshest fish that local fishermen bring in daily: mullet, sea bream, lobster, and the inimitable tuna.
The restaurant’s dedication to this distinctive seafood cuisine has earned it a Michelin Recommended award for 2026. It is open for lunch and dinner, closed on Mondays, and offers outdoor seating, private parties, and takeaway.
