The story
In the quiet hills of Monfumo, in the comune of Castelcucco, Osteria alla Chiesa is the domain of chef Claudio Gazzola and his partner Giada. The restaurant’s name, taken from the church that stands nearby, hints at its setting: a narrow lane, a stone building, and a kitchen that works on impulse.
Claudio Gazzola is a self-taught cook, described by local food writers as a natural talent. He cooks instinctively. The combinations and compositions of his dishes are impulsive, but the sourcing is anything but. The kitchen pays rigorous attention to seasonality, to “good” food, and to “good” producers—small-scale farmers and artisans who share the same philosophy. Most ingredients come from the Veneto region.
The cuisine is modern, shaped by curiosity, modern cooking techniques, and what the team calls “a little madness.” There are no a la carte options here. The experience is built around three tasting menus, each named to reflect a different philosophy. La Ragione (€75) is a four-course introduction to the kitchen’s thinking. L’Equilibrio (€90) stretches to six courses, a balance between reason and instinct. L’Istinto (€110) is the fullest expression: eight courses driven by Claudio’s whim of the moment. Wine pairings are available for each.
The menus are not revealed in advance. The team believes that surprise is essential to the meal, and that knowing the dishes beforehand creates preconceptions. The focus stays on the raw ingredients and the story they tell at that exact moment of the year.
Osteria alla Chiesa’s commitment to this honest, ingredient-led approach earned it a recommendation in the Michelin Guide—a recognition that aligns with the restaurant’s quiet confidence. There is no grand dining room, no elaborate decor. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service warm. It is the kind of place where the cooking speaks for itself, and the setting lets it be heard.
