The story

Taverna Estia: Michelin 2-Star Contemporary Dining in Castello di Cisterna, Italy

A Family Affair in Campania

Taverna Estia, in Castello di Cisterna, is the work of two brothers and the generations before them. Francesco Sposito learned his craft beside his father Armando; Mario carries the warmth of hospitality from his mother Margherita, along with a passion for wine. The restaurant feels both personal and polished.

Jasmine-lined walls and an aromatic garden set the tone. The Sposito family describes the experience as an exploration of “senses, culture, and the unconscious” — plates that speak directly to emotion.

A Decade of Two Michelin Stars

Since 2015, Taverna Estia has held two Michelin stars, a recognition confirmed for ten consecutive years. The Michelin guide awards it for “excellent cooking.” The kitchen’s contemporary cuisine is rooted in Campanian tradition, reinterpreting local ingredients with artistic precision. Herbs from the garden appear throughout the menu, tethering each dish to the land.

Mario curates a thoughtful wine list, and the restaurant offers tasting journeys — “Memoria del Tempo,” “Diciottofilari,” and “Cammenan' Cammenan'” — available as gift experiences meant to be remembered.

Contemporary Cuisine, Grounded in Place

The contemporary cuisine at Taverna Estia avoids empty spectacle. Dishes highlight Vesuvius red tomatoes, sweet-and-sour papaccella peppers, and organic olive oil from Itrana olives — ingredients the restaurant also sells through its shop, letting guests take the flavors home.

Meals unfold at a deliberate pace, each course revealing a new layer of the brothers’ vision. The dining room is available for private events, and outdoor seating offers an alternative in warmer months. This is a place where family, tradition, and ambition meet, and the cooking speaks for itself.

In Brusciano, just a few kilometers from Naples, deep within Vesuvian territory, Taverna Estia was founded as a family trattoria in 1998 and has since grown to become one of Southern Italy’s most important kitchens. Run by brothers Francesco and Mario Sposito, respectively chef and sommelier-owner, the space is intimate, essential, and meticulously detailed: a contemporary home that reflects the maturity of the project. The wine cellar, largely exposed and serving as a central design element, houses a monumental wine list. Francesco’s cooking is rigorous, personal, and deeply rooted in the local terroir, yet free in its execution and open to culinary cross-pollination. Dishes feature few ingredients, each clearly recognizable and intensely focused in flavor. You start with a thoughtfully conceived and carefully crafted aperitif that acts as a manifesto of the chef’s cuisine, instantly showing you where you are by letting you savor the very best. This clear and consistently fresh vision on the plate is supported by precise, never rigid service. Must-tries include the Squid Tagliatella, and an absolute must-have is the Roasted Vesuvian Artichoke with charcoal-scented oil. Three tasting menu options are available, including a chef’s discretion menu priced at €230.
