The story
Hostaria Viola began in 1909, founded by great-grandparents Carlo Viola and Santa Besacchi in a small hamlet near Castel Goffredo. What started as a countryside family’s passion for cuisine and wine has been passed down through four generations. In 1979, the restaurant moved to Castiglione delle Stiviere, where it became a reference point for authentic Mantuan cuisine, drawing guests from other provinces. Today, that same dedication to the territory’s culinary tradition remains unchanged.
The kitchen’s philosophy is rooted in the family tradition of selecting the best raw materials, handled with dedication and love. The result is a contemporary take on classic Lombardian and Mantuan dishes—honest, refined, and deeply connected to the land. This commitment to quality and value earned Hostaria Viola a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a recognition reserved for restaurants offering good quality, good value cooking.
The restaurant’s interior reflects its long history: warm, welcoming spaces where the focus is squarely on the table. The setting is comfortable and unpretentious, designed to let the food and the company shine. From the carefully curated wine list to the handmade pasta rolled on the spianatoia, every detail speaks to a kitchen that respects its roots while looking forward.
The menu changes with the seasons, but the spirit is constant: starters, first courses, second courses, and desserts that celebrate the flavors of the Mantuan countryside. The kitchen’s love for the territory is evident in every plate, from the rich agnoli to the slow-cooked meats. It is a cuisine that feels both familiar and surprising—a testament to four generations of passion.
