The story
Since 2004, Osteria Magona has been a destination for those who appreciate grilled meat done right. The restaurant started in the center of Bolgheri and later moved to a restored Tuscan farmhouse, the Casale Vallone dei Messi, along the Bolgherese wine road. Surrounded by vineyards and with a view of the sea, the setting is pure Maremma.
Chef Omar Barsacchi runs the kitchen with his wife Marina and son Rocco. The atmosphere is simple and welcoming, rooted in Italian tradition. The menu focuses on Tuscan and Mediterranean cuisine, with a strong emphasis on grilled meats – or as the restaurant puts it, “la miglior ciccia alla brace.” The selection of beef comes from Dario Cecchini, the celebrated butcher of Panzano, ensuring quality cuts that are cooked over wood coals.
Barsacchi is not only a chef but also a passionate hunter, a hobby that deepens his connection to the land and ingredients. He competes in practical hunting trials with his setters, a tradition he learned from his father. This respect for the countryside and its produce is evident in every dish.
Osteria Magona’s commitment to good value and quality has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, a recognition that highlights the restaurant’s honest, well-executed cooking. Whether you come for lunch or dinner, the focus is on robust flavors, prime meats, and a warm, unpretentious experience. The restaurant also offers a selection of salumi and formaggi for a lighter afternoon snack, and there is even a small Museo del Carbone on the premises, adding a touch of local history.
For anyone exploring the Bolgheri wine region, Osteria Magona is a reliable stop for authentic Tuscan cuisine and the finest grilled meats.
