Just minutes from the centre of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Baita Fraina sits in a spot that has been synonymous with hospitality since the day it opened. The building started life as a farmhouse, reachable only by a single path, with a stable and hayloft still attached. In 1956, grandparents Enrico Menardi and Clelia welcomed the first guests with a smile and a simple snack—a plate of speck or cream and blueberries. That spirit of sincere, family-run warmth has never faded, even as the place has quietly evolved.

Today, those values remain the foundation. What has changed is the ambition in the kitchen. The restaurant now describes its food as "… i piatti della tradizione rivisitati in chiave moderna"—traditional dishes reimagined in a modern key. This is classic Italian country cooking, rooted in the Dolomites, but lifted by a lighter, more contemporary touch. The menu changes with the seasons, and the ingredients speak for the place: straightforward, well-sourced, and honest.

Baita Fraina’s recognition by the Michelin guide as a Recommended restaurant reflects this commitment to quality—not through fuss or formality, but through the confident execution of regional flavours. Guests speak of a remarkable wine list, and the Baita’s own enoteca in Largo Poste underlines a serious dedication to fine bottles, from Champagne to Friulian classics.

The setting adds its own pull. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with panoramic views across the surrounding landscape. Six guest rooms, recently renovated and furnished in a comfortable mountain style, make it possible to linger. Breakfast is homemade, with cakes, yogurt and preserves alongside cured meats and eggs cooked to order.
