The story

Funtanin – Modern Cuisine in Cuggiono, Michelin Recommended

A Kitchen Rooted in the Land

In the quiet countryside of Castelletto di Cuggiono, set against the green backdrop of the Parco del Ticino, Funtanin is an agriturismo that lives by its own creed: Coltiviamo ciò che cuciniamo, cuciniamo ciò che siamo – we cultivate what we cook, we cook what we are. The kitchen draws directly from the estate’s garden and from the lake, with a menu that shifts with the seasons and the daily catch. Funtanin has earned a Michelin recommendation for this sincere, locally‑anchored approach to modern cuisine.

The Spirit of the Table

Funtanin’s philosophy is deliberately unhurried. As the restaurant puts it, fewer dishes are designed to astonish; more are made to be lived. The result is cooking that feels authentic, spontaneous, and honest – tied to the season, the ingredients, and the people around the table. The dining room is welcoming and elegant, with outdoor seating available in warmer months. The wine list is predominantly Lombard, each bottle chosen to reflect a direct connection with local producers.

What’s on the Plate

The menu changes regularly, but recent offerings give a clear sense of the kitchen’s direction. Starters include Culaccia ubriaca con pan fritto (cured ham “drunk” with wine, served with fried bread) and Battuto di manzo, cipolla in agrodolce, salsa al tuorlo e ricotta salata – a chopped beef dish with sweet‑sour onion, egg yolk sauce, and salted ricotta. Among the primi, the Plin di stracotto di braised veal with saffron cream and bone marrow reduction stands out, as does the Risotto all’ortica (nettle risotto) with crispy Arborella and coregone bottarga. Secondi range from a Taglio scelto di manzo with roasted tomato, parmesan fondue, and black truffle to lake fish like Coregone con pesche spadellate e zucchina alla scapece. The kitchen notes that it serves only lake fish, depending on the day’s catch.

Beyond Dinner

During the week, a business lunch is offered Monday to Friday (closed Thursday), providing a lighter, refined pause in the workday. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons from 5 to 7 pm, the Apericena turns into a convivial spread of shared plates – from a Gran tagliere conviviale (large sharing board) to vitello tonnato, marinated trout, and fried fish – all paired with carefully selected wines. It’s a moment that captures the restaurant’s essence: good food, good company, and a rhythm that feels natural.
