The story

Osteria la Fefa, Finale Emilia: Emilian Tradition with a Michelin Bib Gourmand

A Historic Osteria Reborn

In the heart of Finale Emilia, on the main street of the historic Estense quarter, Osteria la Fefa has been a local landmark for generations. When Giovanna Guidetti walked into the place for the first time on 4 October 2000, she saw a dilapidated room – but also a beautiful dream. She bought it from Francesco Orlandi, descendant of the original Signora Genoveffa, and set about reviving its soul.

Her mission was clear: to save the culinary traditions of the Bassa Modenese and Finale Emilia in particular, using quality ingredients and carefully sourced raw materials. That philosophy has guided every dish since.

Cooking with Tradition

Giovanna’s kitchen respects the past while welcoming modern techniques. Everything is made by hand: the pasta sfoglia for tagliatelle and stuffed pastas is rolled with a mattarello; bread, biscuits, grissini, and the local specialty “Torta degli Ebrei” are prepared using traditional methods. Cured meats come from artisan producers who avoid preservatives. Only extra-virgin olive oil from Italian olives, cold-pressed, is used. Vegetables, legumes, and grains are sourced from local organic farms, and beef comes from certified Italian herds.

A nod to Giovanna’s time in Sicily appears at the start of each meal: a crisp sfogliatella filled with beef and vegetables, finished with Modena balsamic vinegar and Bronte pistachio granules.

Two Signature Dishes

The “Piatto del Buon Ricordo” – a rabbit salad with garden vegetables, mayonnaise, and quail eggs – exemplifies the restaurant’s clean, ingredient-driven style. The “Torta degli Ebrei” (or “sfogliata”) is a savoury layered pastry of Jewish origin, a Finale Emilia staple since the 16th century. Both dishes honour the region’s deep culinary heritage.

The seasonal “Menù del Territorio” offers a complete four-course journey: a Parmigiano Reggiano and crispy prosciutto flan, squash cappellacci with sage and amaretti, tagliatelle with classic ragù, and braised duck leg in sweet-and-sour sauce with Lambrusco and grapes, finished with a tagliatelle cake perfumed with Anicione liqueur from the local Casoni distillery.

A Bib Gourmand Recognition

The Michelin guide awarded Osteria la Fefa a Bib Gourmand in 2026, praising its good quality, good value cooking. The recognition fits naturally: here, Emilian cuisine is neither fussy nor forgotten – it is simply, carefully, and lovingly made. The wine list, overseen by the adjacent Il Pavone Enoteca, is worth exploring, and the warm, modest dining room (with outdoor seating in season) makes every meal feel like a genuine act of hospitality.
