The story
L’Ortone sits in the Sant’Ambrogio district, right in front of the market – a lively, lived‑in corner of Florence away from the tourist crowds. The restaurant calls itself a place where “the recipes of once upon a time and seasonal raw materials go hand in hand with today’s cooking.” Some guests call it a contemporary trattoria; the team simply calls it home.
The space opens onto two floors in winter, while in summer the veranda becomes the heart of the house. Whether you stop for a glass of wine and a tagliere at the counter or settle in for a full meal, the atmosphere is warm, unhurried, and genuinely Florentine.
The menu changes with the seasons, built on fresh pasta made in‑house, bread baked daily, and desserts from the same hands. The kitchen works with a trusted butcher from the market for the Fiorentina steak, sources porcini and truffles when they appear, and never forgets a vegetarian option. Dishes like the maltagliati with duck ragù and cocoa, or the poached egg with courgettes in scapece, show how tradition meets a modern touch.
This honest, value‑conscious approach earned L’Ortone a Michelin Bib Gourmand – a recognition of good quality, good value cooking that feels right at home here.
L’Ortone is very much a family affair. Fede leads the group with energy and a deep connection to his grandmother’s advice and his father Simone’s presence. The dining room team focuses on smiles and care; the kitchen works with instinct and research. The restaurant’s name itself comes from an old street, via dell’Ortone, which once marked the agricultural zone of the cloistered nuns of Santa Verdiana – a quiet nod to the neighbourhood’s past.
The wine list is a point of pride, with labels from Tuscany, Piedmont, Alto Adige, and France – “a selection worth the journey,” they say. It all adds up to a trattoria that feels both timeless and of the moment, rooted in place and made for sharing.
