The story
Il Mirto is the restaurant of Botania Relais & Spa on the island of Ischia, and it exists for one reason: to put the products of the earth at the centre of the table. The kitchen, led by chef Tommaso Luongo, works exclusively with vegetarian and vegan proposals – an unusual approach for the island, and one rooted in a deep respect for seasonality and local producers.
The inspiration comes from Ischia’s peasant culture. A garden, cultivated consciously, guides the kitchen. The result is a cuisine that the restaurant describes as “ethical and environmentally conscious,” and Michelin recognised this commitment with a Green Star in 2023, the highest sustainability award from the guide. Il Mirto holds a Michelin Recommended distinction as well, drawing attention to its modern cuisine from the Campania region.
The dining room is welcoming and bright, with an elegant, essential design that balances with the surrounding landscape. Large windows and a terrace allow guests to feel connected to the garden that supplies much of the produce. The staff is trained to guide diners through a menu that changes with the seasons – no single dish is fixed, but the philosophy is consistent: reduce waste, work with sustainable suppliers, eliminate plastic, and value every ingredient.
Chef Luongo’s dishes are described as “tasty and surprising creations,” transforming garden delights into plates that respect tradition while feeling contemporary. The experience aims to nourish not just the body but the heart, in a setting that feels both refined and grounded.
Il Mirto is open for dinner from Monday to Sunday (closed Thursday), with last seating for the tasting menu at 10pm and for à la carte at 10.30pm. It offers outdoor seating, air conditioning, parking, and takeaway – a complete, conscious dining destination on the island of Ischia.
